Tenant Compacts

Tenants Compacts

The Tenants Compact is an agreement between tenants, residents and leaseholders and St Leger Homes of Doncaster. The agreement sets out how all parties will work together to achieve the best possible housing service by involving tenants and residents and leaseholders in major decisions relating to housing.

Representatives of the Doncaster Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations, local councillors and members of St Leger Homes of Doncaster Community Liaison Team developed the Compact. The document was published in April 2000 and is currently under review.

The Compact gives residents of Doncaster's council estates access to genuine and meaningful participation and consultation in the processes that relate to the management and strategic planning of the borough's housing service.

The Compact is built on many years of tenant and resident involvement and the agreement underlines St Leger Homes of Doncaster's commitment to the provision of the best possible housing service for its customers.

There are four underlying ideals to the Compact. These are to:

  • actively involve customers in the decision-making processes that impact on the services they receive and the development and re-establishment of the sense of community
  • support and encourage participation at a level and pace decided by tenants and residents
  • identify local and borough-wide issues and to consider innovative options and strategies to address such issues within the spirit of partnership
  • ensure that outcomes positively contribute to St Leger Homes of Doncaster's commitment to Best Value and best meet the needs of customers.

There are two different types of Compact agreements - the borough-wide agreement described above, which ensures that tenants across the Doncaster Borough can input to strategic decisions and a local or, neighbourhood, version.

Local Compact agreements are produced for specific areas or neighbourhoods, for example an estate. As well as helping to develop tenant consultation and participation structures they are a good way of getting tenants involved in local issues.
