Dunscroft man Roy Johnson has been crowned
Doncaster's good neighbour of the year for 2009.

Roy (73), of Broadwater Drive, received the prestigious award in an Oscars style ceremony at the Unity in the Community event held at Doncaster Racecourse.

The event was organised by the Doncaster Federation of Tenants' and Residents' Association and supported by St Leger Homes of Doncaster - the organisation that manages around 21,000 homes for Doncaster Council.

Roy was chosen after being nominated by Margaret Lever and other neighbours. When Margaret moved in, Roy and his wife June introduced themselves and offered hot drinks and sandwiches. Since then Roy cuts the grass, weeds the borders, cleans the windows and takes her dog Dixie for a walk as well as many more chores. In the recent snowy weather Roy cleared the snow and put grit down near the bungalows so that no-one would fall while going to their dustbins. He has also helped to do decorating for Margaret.

Margaret said: "Roy is well known and respected in the local area. Besides helping neighbours, he has looked after his disabled wife for many years. He really does deserve this award."

Roy said: "I am over the moon and surprised. It's a lovely way to be recognised."
