Doncaster Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations

Doncaster Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations (known as TARAs) and Tenants Clubs are the main consultative body to both St. Leger Homes of Doncaster and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council.

The group consists of representatives from St. Leger Homes tenants, Leaseholders, Private Landlord, Residents and Housing Association members.

Our aim is to provide everyone in Doncaster with the opportunity to voice their opinions on housing and estates in a forum where it will be heard. We work closely with both St. Leger Homes of Doncaster and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council to ensure that you are provided with good service.

We would like to encourage you to join one of our existing TARAs or develop your own if there is not one in your community - so your voices can be heard. If you would like more information on TARAs in your area please contact either ourselves on 01302 737490 or the St. Leger HomesCommunity Engagement Team on 01302 862292.

A Tenants and Residents Association or a tenant club can provide one of the best ways for tenants and residents to become involved in the decision making processes that affect their lives and the development of their local communities.

Representatives from the Federation - volunteers elected every year by association and club members - meet together as the Standing Joint Committee of the Doncaster Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations. The committee is better known by its abbreviated title - the SJC. The SJC meets regularly to discuss local and national housing issues.

St. Leger Homes of Doncaster consults formally with the SJC on a monthly basis to ensure that the views of tenants and residents are recognised and included in all aspects of housing management. Members of the SJC are also actively involved in numerous other community partnership initiatives.

The Standing Joint Committee is based at The Tenants and Residents Resource Centre, 40 St James Street. The Tenants and Residents Resource Centre is fully equipped with modern information and communication technology equipment; it has the benefit of full disability access and a well-equipped kitchen and is open from 9 am to 3pm Monday to Friday - visits from members of associations and clubs are welcomed during these hours.

When you set up your association you will have decided on the area you wish to cover and you will have also adopted a basic set of rules ( the constitution ) under which you will operate. For example:-

You will hold at least four meetings per year.

You will keep proper records of financial transactions.

You will keep records of the meetings and hold an Annual General Meeting for your members

This basic set of rules is very important because they mean that you are officially recognised by Doncaster Council as a proper constituted group when it comes to consultation.
